Press Release: South Shore School District Referendum Approved by Voters

[Port Wing, WI] – The South Shore School District is pleased to announce the success of its $14.75 million facilities referendum, with unofficial results indicating 58% voter approval. This investment will address critical needs, including updates to heating, ventilation, and plumbing systems; construction of a secure entrance; expansion of classroom spaces and the fitness center; and ADA-compliant renovations. For the first time in 30 years, the District joined over 50 other Wisconsin districts on the November 5th ballot seeking capital referendum approval. To reduce taxpayer impact, the Board of Education committed $3 million from district savings, making the total project cost $17.75 million. Serving the community since 1977, the building will undergo essential updates to continue providing a safe, high-quality learning environment for current and future students.

The passage of this referendum follows extensive community engagement, including a district-wide survey, feedback from a community focus group, and over two months of referendum information sharing. Superintendent Dani Mikula expressed appreciation for the community’s support, stating, “I’m incredibly grateful and inspired by the support from our community. The approval of this referendum reflects the powerful shared commitment to our schools, children, and community. With these improvements, we’re creating safer, more efficient and more innovative spaces that will serve students and our community for generations. It’s been a privilege to connect with so many residents who care deeply about our schools, and I look forward to all the wonderful things this will bring to our South Shore community.”

Next, the design phase will begin, continuing for approximately nine months and involving ongoing discussions with district staff, community members, and other stakeholders to ensure the project reflects shared goals. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2026, with a thoughtful phasing plan allowing the district to sequence construction strategically to minimize disruption, maintain educational focus, and align with the needs of students and staff.
